iPhone 4 sudden battery drain problem

I have had the following problem occur repeatedly. I get a new iPhone4 (this is my third one). It works fine for 2-3 months. Then suddenly, the battery starts draining very fast. Instead of lasting the entire day, it is near 0% within 3 hours (by 10 am after a full charge overnight). I systematically close my multiprocessing programs and at least once a week I turn the phone off overnight. A couple times I was able to fix the problem through a hard reset, but it resurfaced a couple months later. This suggests that the problem is software-related....perhaps some program running constantly in the background. But then why does the problem start after a couple of months of perfect operation?
The Apple Genius Bar people say I'm doing everything right, but I'm the only one with this problem. Is this true? Anyone else experiencing this suddent battery drain issue?
