iPhone 4 price after release of 4S?

How long after the release of the iPhone 4s were the iPhone4/3GS available at a reduced rate from Apple. Immediately or was there some delay? Am purchasing a 4/4S as a gift (start of September Birthday) but want to wait til the new iPhone comes out (a month wouldnt hurt too much) and hopefully the 4S will cost the same as the 4 does now. I assume, but could be wrong the the models will shuffle down in price. I may be wrong but as long as the wait isn't too long I think its worth it.
