Do iPod updates ever mess up your iPod, specifically its battery behavior?

Tried asking this in another forum with no results. After updating my 3G 20gb iPod software/firmware/whatever for the first time in a very long time, it started behaving weirdly.
I thought the battery was finally going really bad, because it would die so quickly after a full charge, I'm talking less than 40 minutes. And it was doing some seemingly random freeze/resets, after which it would forget my settings.
But it just seemed so sudden, so I tried resetting it once when it told me the battery had run out. And it played for a good while longer. Then it died again, I reset it again, and it worked a good while longer again. I have gotten varying results since then.
What is this? Has this happened to you? Can this behavior have been caused by the iPod update? Is there anything I can do about it? If the battery is genuinely going, I want to replace it, but if it's some kind of software bug, that would be a waste of money. What do you thin
