app for route tracking for jogging

I'm currently using Smartrunner to keep track of how far I'm going when walking or jogging, but I have some issues with how it works on the iphone and I'm wondering if there might not be a better solution out there. I don't care about the upload capability or route tracking - I just want to know distance traveled. Smartrunner requires that the screen stay on the whole time it's in use, it has a built-in "lock" capability but the screen is still active. Also, if the app gets closed for any reason - phone call, etc. - it loses the current distance traveled and starts over. Not exactly helpful. I would assume that there will be apps like this that use the background location services eventually. So - any recommendations?
