Best free texting app

So I pay 20$ a month to att for unlimited texting. Most of my texts go through iMessage now and the other < 300 texts I send a month are sent via my carrier.
My question is what is the best text app that will make it so I don't have to pay for texting at all? I want to drop my 20$ unlimited texting plan and use a third party app that still uses my real phone number. However when I search for apps and such they all look like scams or something alone those lines.
Any suggestions?

Best free texting app for iOS 5?
location:
macrumors.com - date:

Hey guys,
I was just wondering what the best free texting ap would be for iOS 5? I'm currently using textie, but whenever i send a text to someone that destine use the app it shows up as a weird cryptic number. the only reason they know its me is because none of their other friends use this app. are there any that will send messages and have my number attached, so it shows up on their phone like it was a regular sms, i.e. with my name and not the mystery numbers? also, textie at this moment will not let me send messages, making me think that their servers are down or something... weird, and its the first time its happened so its not really a big deal, but still, there has to something better. Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks guys

I'd like my daughter to be able to send text messages from her iPod Touch to my Mac. Is there a free app that is iOS and OS X compatible? I have been having very little luck finding something. I've worked on a Mac for years but am completely unfamiliar with portable devices. Help!
