2000 Camry--Tape Deck Not Working

I have a tape deck converter for my car that I can hook up to my iPod and play, but my tape deck has been making weird noises when I put the converter or a tape in the deck. It makes this whirring, clicking noise. The music still plays from the iPod but this noise is so obnoxious and distracting, and my tapes will only sometimes play if I fiddle with the rewind and fast forward, maybe. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
